PRESENTATION
The 2012 International Museum Day has been dedicated by ICOM to "Museums in a Changing World. New challenges, New inspirations". Following this lead, the Brazilian Association of Ecomuseums and Community Museums (ABREMC) and the Amazonia Ecomuseum, in partnership with NOPH and others, are organizing the 4th International Meeting of Ecomuseums and Community Museums, in Belém, on June 12-16, 2012.
This meeting follows three previous encounters held in Rio de Janeiro, in 1992, 2000 and 2004. It aims at making the museum community aware of community based museological processes, through experiences shared between professionals, volunteers, students, researchers, observers.
The meeting is addressed mostly to community museums, ecomuseums, living museums, territory museums, open space museums, etc. which contribute to rooting the population in their milieu, to reinforcing the sense of belonging to a place or to a community, to social cohesion and quality of life.
In Portuguese, the selected theme is called "Patrimônio e Capacitação", the latter word being more or less equivalent to the English "Empowerment". We intend to discuss the various actions undertaken in a given community, in order to help its members to develop and/or acquire the knowhow, the practices, the techniques which will enable them to be actors of their own development, i.e. for the improvement of their living conditions, in a way both sustainable and responsible.
The Belém meeting will demonstrate, from concrete experiences brought by the participants and critical analyses, how heritage can and should be a major asset for this process: natural resources, traditions, technical knowledge, the environment of the daily life itself are raw materials to be indentified and utilized, to obtain the best possible cultural, social and economic returns, thanks to the initiative, the labour and the creativity of community members, either as individuals or collectively, in the interest and for the profit of the community as a whole. Agriculture and fisheries, crafts, tourism will be the main domains studied.
The meeting will also deal with the basic conditions of such an endogenous development: social organization, co-operative structures, management techniques. The school system, which aggregates parents, teachers and students will be, in Belém a privileged environment, due to the Amazonia Ecomuseum being part of the Escola Bosque Foundation, which itself is a division of the Department of Education of the City of Belém, and where the working sessions will be held. The working sessions (plenary, round tables, workshops, forums) will present, analyze and evaluate field cases, their methods and their results.
